MONTREAL — With her feathered eye patch always snapped in place, Velma Candyass and her troupe of neo-burlesque, vaudeville “zombie” girls have carved out a niche in Montreal’s alternative arts scene.
…
“It does have a history and it does have a heritage — it certainly reeks with atmosphere,” Candyass said of Cafe Cleopatre, home to the upstairs show bar as well as a main-floor club where strippers dance in the warmth of black lights.
…
“He offers excellent work conditions for the women who are on the first floor — the strippers,” she said, adding he hires women of all ages and body types.
“That’s something you don’t necessarily find in the other strip clubs.”

The development comes at a time when local researchers at the University of Nairobi, collaborating with those from Manitoba University of Canada, have intensified efforts to find the gene that protects some Kenyan prostitutes from HIV infections despite repeated exposure to the virus.
The study conducted at Kenyatta National Hospital’s School of Medicine hopes to come up with a new way of designing a vaccine candidate.
Since last year the researchers have opened up new centres in Korogocho and Kangemi to study more prostitutes. The research will go on until 2010 and is expected to shed more light on why they are resistant to HIV infection.
…
Although the incidence of HIV in Kenya is said to have stabilised in the last few years, there are still concerns over specific groups which include couples and steady partners, male prostitutes and surprisingly enough among medical personnel.
Rome – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to arrive in Italy Tuesday for talks with his Italian counterpart, Silvio Berlusconi. Berlusconi “is a great friend of Israel working to promote peace and security,” Netanyahu said in an interview with Italian state television broadcast on the eve of his departure for Rome.
The visit marks the right-wing Israeli premier’s first trip to Europe since since taking office nearly three months ago.
It also takes place at a delicate moment for Berlusconi, who in recent days has kept an uncustomary low profile – on both national and international issues – following a scandal involving allegations that a call girl was paid to stay overnight at one of his residences.
Netanyahu and Berlusconi are expected to discuss the situation in the Middle East, especially the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the violence that erupted in Iran following the June 12 presidential elections.
Police say he sat with Vito Rizzuto, the head of the Mafia in Montreal, at a baptism in 1996; was with several mob bosses at a funeral in 1999; and seen in a café in 2000 with Vito Rizzuto and Tony Mucci, a mobster who shot and injured a reporter at Le Devoir newspaper in 1973. A police informant also said Gallo acted as a mediator between the Hells Angels and the Mafia.
Gallo dismissed this as “casual contact” and “ill-advised associations” not involving crime.
On April 4, 2007, the connections became more incriminating when the RCMP gave prison officials a 27-page report on Gallo that came from Project Colisée, the large police operation targeting the Mafia.
Police alleged that criminals referred to him by the nickname “Solid Gold,” presumably after the strip club of the same name he once ran, and that he intervened in several underworld disputes, which he denies, apart from one argument involving a massage parlour in which he helped smooth things out because of his “peacemaker” philosophy, he said.
Presented in court, the
e-mails and text messages of Edouard Stern, head of a French banking family, to
Cecile Brossard, his lover, suggested a deep-rooted obsession that ended when
she shot him one February evening four years ago. Police found him tied to a
chair and dressed in a latex suit. “You are a sh** and I vomit on you,” writes
Stern on one occasion, and on another: “I love you madly, for ever. Your little
devil.” He says how “sad” he is that they “scolded” each other. Later he writes:
“You’re just a whore. You would have worked for the Gestapo during the war. You
would have turned me in as a Jew.”
The defence has tried to present
the killing as a “crime of passion” in which Brossard, a 40-year-old former
escort girl and shop assistant, exploded in anger when Stern, alluding to a gift
of $1m that he was taking back from her, said: “A million is a lot to pay for a
whore.”
In one of the earlier chapters of Laliberte’s life, for example, the Quebec City native took his burgeoning circus act to Los Angeles to try to crack the U. S. market.
But he had no gas money to get back to Quebec if his gamble didn’t pay off.
“They would have all had to walk back to Montreal,” Halperin said. “And that’s the kind of risks he took. This is not a get-rich-quick story.”
One of two excerpts from the book published this week by L’Actualite magazine do go into intimate detail about the post-Formula One parties Laliberte used to host at his Montreal-area mansion.
According to Halperin, from vast quantities of illicit drugs to strippers and prostitutes, Laliberte would not miss a detail or spare any expense to please his most discerning guests, who included George Harrison and Robert De Niro.
John Mahoney/Canwest News ServiceThe Café Cleopatra strip club on St. Laurent is one of the last businesses in Montreal’s once busy red-light district.
MONTREAL — With its sign promising “strip-teaseuses ” and “danseuses à go-go,” Café Cleopatra is one of the last vestiges of what was once a bustling red-light district on St-Laurent Boulevard, Montreal’s Main. Now, most of the storefronts on the block are boarded-up, and if a city-backed developer gets its way, the red light will soon flicker out. Cleopatra’s strippers and drag queens will make way for office workers.
…
“What is called the red light has not existed for 15 years,” he said in an interview. “In the sector where we are working, most businesses are closed, with sheets of plywood in the window…. People are trying to portray the Cleopatra as something extraordinary. However it’s simply a strip club. That’s all it is.”
…
For Linda, a stripper who said she has been dancing at bars in the neighbourhood for 30 years, losing the Cleopatra is unthinkable. She said it is the only strip club in the city that welcomes dancers of varying body shapes, ethnic backgrounds and ages (she’s 49.)
… Omer used to tend bar at Roma Antiqua, which is where L’Orchidee is now. I begged him to come work with me,” Lau recalls at the L’Autre Saison bar. “I would have made a million with him. He has the touch. There’s not a drink he doesn’t know how to make. And he knows just about everyone in town. He is a true Montreal original.”
Dotting the bar are photos of Brousseau with everyone from baseball star Sammy Sosa to Paul Newman: “One of the finest gentlemen I ever had the privilege of serving.”
Brousseau also remembers mixing drinks for late Quebec premier Maurice Duplessis and film star Dorothy Lamour. “Those were the days bars never closed in Montreal,” Brousseau reminisces, his eyes twinkling. “If the walls could have talked, what stories they would have told.
“People think Montreal is wild today. Hah! They have no idea what wild is.
“Those were the days Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis would show up regularly and play clubs like the El Morocco. Then there was Lili St. Cyr, the classiest stripper of them all, at the old Gayety Theatre.
Woman Jailed for Killing Multimillionaire French Lover
Cécile Brossard sentenced to eight years in prison for shooting banker Edouard Stern during violent sex game
A woman found guilty of shooting dead one of France’s richest men while he was tied to a chair during a sadomasochistic sex session was today sentenced to eight and a half years in prison.
Cécile Brossard, a shop assistant turned artist, admitted killing Edouard Stern and argued that she had done so in a fit of pique when he suggested she was a $1m prostitute.
The jury rejected her defence and said her crime was “extremely serious”.
Brossard has served four years in pretrial detention and could be available for parole at the end of 2010.
Stern, a 50-year-old banker based in Switzerland, was found dead in March 2005 with four bullet holes in the flesh-colored latex bodysuit that covered him from head to toe.

It details some of the famously decadent parties that Mr Laliberté financed with the proceeds of his business empire, which currently controls 18 shows in dozens of countries, and supports almost 4,000 employees, including hundreds of the world’s most talented dancers and acrobats.
During the parties, global business leaders, politicians, and Hollywood stars were entertained by Cirque du Soleil performers, and provided with millions of dollars’ worth of fine food and wine. Author Ian Halperin, who quotes dozens of former guests, details heroic displays of debauchery.
“Everything you wanted was available at Guy’s parties,” said Myra Jones, a Milan-based fashion model who attended several of the events.
“Drugs, the best music spun by famous DJs flown in from Europe and the USA, and the wildest sex you could ever imagine.”
The book claims that Laliberté’s assistants invited busloads of prostitutes from his native Montreal to the parties, which were attended by the likes of Robert DeNiro and Sir Paul McCartney. Mere B-list guests were required to sign a confidentiality agreement before attending.
