JERSEY CITY, N.J. Boxing trainer Mike Skowronski honed his skills beside Arturo Gatti at Jersey City’s Ringside Gym and said the former champ’s longtime friends never liked Gatti’s wife — who is suspected of strangling him.
Skowronski, Gatti’s one-time stablemate, sparring mate and cornerman, said Amanda Rodrigues met the boxing legend while working as a stripper in northern New Jersey and quickly became his business adviser and then his wife. Friends in the working-class area of Jersey City where Gatti paid his dues in the ring were suspicious of her motives but didn’t want to offend him by pushing the matter.
“She tried to take over — she pushed him away from everybody,” Skowronski said Tuesday. “I chose not to be around it, if you can imagine that, after being friends for 20 years. A lot of his friends did the same.”

Avelino has made a public statement alleging that the former stripper could not have had the physical strength to murder the popular Montreal resident who had so many brutal bouts on HBO including a trilogy against Irish Micky Ward.

Although Brazilian police say no one but his wife could have killed boxer Arturo Gatti, through her attorney, Amanda Rodrigues Gatti has proclaimed her innocence.
According to the New York Daily News, her lawyer, Celio Avelino said his client is much too “fragile” to have killed the boxer, is innocent and wants to be released from jail. The former stripper, according to Avelino, “…is fragile, young and skinny—how could she kill a boxing champion?”
“When she awoke, she presumed he had committed suicide. But she had nothing to do with it,” said Avelino.
Lead investigator Moises Teixeira said, “It was technically impossible for a third person to have been in the flat. The investigation isn’t finished, but we continue to think she did this alone.”

Brazilian cops put the bloody purse strap and knife that killed Arturo Gatti on display Monday as his wife’s lawyer insisted she’s too “fragile, young and skinny” to kill a boxing champ.
Police said there’s no way anyone but Gatti’s 23-year-old wife, ex-stripper Amanda Rodrigues, was inside the couple’s luxurious rental apartment when the former champ was killed.
“It was technically impossible for a third person to have been in the flat,” lead investigator Moises Teixeira said Monday. “She did this alone.”
There were no signs of forced entry. Electronic locks indicated no one else had entered the room.
