For generations, the Yellow Pages has been the Cheshire Cat of search: when you didn’t quite know where you wanted to go, it was there to help you. Fortunately, the Yellow Pages was a bit less smug than Alice’s grinning guide. All you had to do was let your fingers do the walking, and … snap, you could find it, whatever it was.
Walking fingers were a metaphor for saving time and effort: rather than go out and look for a plumber, restaurant, or escort service, you could stay at home, browse the Pages and call. These days, fingers don’t so much walk as hop, skip, and jump across the keyboard; paper pages are more likely to be unwanted clutter than anything useful; and you don’t need to stay home now: you can call while you’re on the move.

… Cleanliness should be our biggest problem,” Hadjiev shoots back. “I’ll be happy to speak to anyone who complains that the Pool Room is too clean.”
The official opening for the new Montreal Pool Room, 1217 St. Laurent Blvd., takes place Wednesday at 5 p.m. The public is invited to attend the festivities. And you’ll never guess what’s on the menu for the opening.
Unlike the Montreal Pool Room, Café Cléopâtre boss Johnny Zoumbulakis has no plans to pull up stakes. He continues to fight expropriation and has taken the developers of the Quartier des Spectacles to court for that purpose – which is one of the reasons the project is in limbo on this stretch of the lower Main.
The Cleo, as it is known in the ‘hood, features strippers on the main floor and offers everything from drag to fashion shows to the über-vamp and camp Dead Doll Dancers revue upstairs.

In is not clear why Joseph was arraigned only Saturday on the weapons charges that date back to Oct. 9, 2009.
In the meantime, further links between Joseph and construction magnate Antonio Magi have been uncovered.
Joseph has been mentioned in police requests for search warrants associated with Magi, including one in November that said Magi hired Joseph in July to collect outstanding loans.
He was arrested near Magi’s offices on Friday, not far from where Nick Rizzuto Jr., the son of reputed mob boss Vito Rizzuto and an associate of Magi, was gunned down in December.
Also in the search warrant, a police informant alleges that in exchange for his services, Magi, who has no criminal record, set Joseph up in a condominium across the street from Wanda’s strip club, above the Eggspectations restaurant at de Maisonneuve Blvd. and Mountain St.

It appears he has ruled with an iron fist, establishing himself as a major player in the lucrative drug and prostitution business in Montreal, filling the shoes left empty after the dismantling of the Hells Angels and the imprisonment of reputed Mafia boss Vito Rizzuto.
At a small triplex on Shelly St. in St. Michel, the woman renting the downstairs apartment opened her door just a crack for reporters and nervously denied knowing anything about her landlady, Joseph’s mother.
Soon after she closed her door on a journalist, a man, sharply dressed in a pink shirt, well-pressed trousers, a long coat and wearing sunglasses, entered the apartment upstairs, where all the blinds were closed. He opened the door a crack when the doorbell rang, but quickly closed it, saying,

Joseph’s violent streak has been known to police since Jan. 8, 1989, when he lured a 12-year-old into prostitution and sexually assaulted her. He pleaded guilty to the assault and was sentenced to eight months in jail plus two years probation.

In a November request for a search warrant for Magi’s office at 5730 Upper Lachine Rd., Montreal police said Magi hired Ducarme in July to collect outstanding loans. In exchange for his services, Magi, who has no criminal record, set Ducarme up in a condominium across the street from Wanda’s strip club, above the Eggspectations restaurant at de Maisonneuve Blvd. and Mountain St.
Magi also survived an attempt on his life in 2008 when a gunman ambushed him in his car while he was driving on Cavendish Blvd. in Notre Dame de Grâce.

The document says Paul, his brother, Vick Sévère Paul, and Fritz Gerald Michel, alias King, are members of the Reds and had been in an all-out war with a man they got into a fight with at a Laval strip club.

She tells us that Montreal  foundress  Jeanne  Mance was the first person to hold the title to what became  Griffintown, but doesn’t tell us why.  (The land was collateral for a loan she made to Montreal’s founder, Paul Chomedey, sieur de Maisonneuve.) Driedger  states that  Mary Griffin sketched out the first street plan of Griffintown;  in fact it was British magistrate Thomas McCord who laid out the first streets and named them after himself and members of his family, William and Eleanor.  The author claims that violent crime in Griffintown  was rare, ignoring the evidence of the often  brutal mayhem  caused by  19th century street gangs  The Irish Catholic Union and the Orange Young Brothers. There is nothing, for example  about the gang wars that ended in  the murder of James  Coligan in 1878.  The book  Includes  the notorious story of Mary Gallagher, the prostitute who had her head chopped off by Susan Kennedy in 1879. Curiously, the author doesn’t mention the fate of Kennedy’s accomplice, Michael …

Although he once said he was “bored” with dressing millionaires, Saint Laurent had his share of celebrity customers and a close inner circle of female friends, from Prince Grace of Monaco and Wallis Simpson to Paloma Picasso, Lauren Bacall, Diana Vreeland and Loulou de la Falaise.
Their clothes get a room to themselves, as does the notorious 1971 “Occupation” collection, with its bitter wartime associations of French women sleeping with Nazis.
The inclusion of furs for summer, as worn by prostitutes in the Bois de Boulogne, was considered particularly vulgar, as vitriolic press reports reproduced on the walls testify. But the show launched the trend for retro, vintage and kitsch, says Chenoune.
Saint Laurent’s long-time muse, the actress Catherine Deneuve, has her own wardrobe, with a rail of dresses and rack of shoes, including her costumes from “Belle de Jour”, in which she played a bored bourgeoise married woman who turns to part-time work in a brothel.
