Innis, McLuhan, and the Shifting Media Landscape
The Joint PhD program in communication (Université de Montréal, Concordia University, and UQAM) will celebrate its 25th anniversary. After a symposium from 1 to 5 p.m. featuring the work of faculty and students in our program – along with two distinguished invited speakers, a unique keynote address will be given by Jeffrey Schnapp (PhD), founder and faculty director of metaLAB at Harvard University, within the context of Luc Courchesne’s immersive installation entitled McLuhan’s Massage Parlour.
Schnapp will discuss how the publication of The Medium is the Massage by McLuhan, Jerome Agel, and Quentin Fiore in 1966 served to revolutionize the paperback format in the subsequent 10-year period. The immersive experience in the dome will provide the public (of our event) with an experience within a medium of which McLuhan could only have dreamed.

The decision came after a court challenge by sex workers arguing certain restrictions were unconstitutional because they robbed them of the right to protect themselves by, for instance, hiring a bodyguard or working indoors instead of on the street.
The Ontario ruling applies only in that province, but because the federal government is likely to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada, the high court decision will have an impact nationwide.
“When I heard that my first thought was, ‘Those hypocrites, they are saying put them (sex workers) somewhere where we can’t see them but are still admitting that prostitution is dangerous,’ ” Marie said.
“It’s the-not-in-my-backyard thinking.”
“This isn’t a choice and it’s not a job,” Julie said. “There’s no more security in doing this inside a bordello.”
“The violence against women is not on the street, it’s between four walls,” Marie said. “There are escort services, massage parlours, all operating now with organized crime and street gangs. Bordellos will be the same.”

Montreal Massage Parlors: Three charged after massage parlour raid

Three people have been charged with running a common bawdy house and prostitution following a recent raid on a Dorval massage parlour.
Montreal police community relations officer HÃ©lÃ¨ne Jubinville at Station 5 in Pointe Claire said police from the station descended on Spa Luna at 185 Dorval Ave. on Feb. 7 at about noon along with officers from the service’s West Island vice-squad. The raid followed a six-month long investigation that police undertook after receiving complaints from local residents.
Two other establishments in Montreal’s east end were also searched as part of the operation, Jubinville said. The owner of the Dorval massage parlour is among the two men and one woman now charged. One of the three charged is a West Island resident.
Spa Luna’s website appeared closed Monday but one poster on another Montreal website devoted to exotic massage parlours described Spa Luna as a great place for a “stud out.” Another wrote: “Saw Anika … indeed a good time … Alisha not so hot.”

Station 5 (Dorval and Pointe Claire) Following several complaints from citizens, Station 5 police, in conjunction with the Morality Squad, raided the massage parlour Spa-Luna located at 185 Dorval Ave. Const. Hélène Jubinville said the owner of the establishment was arrested at the scene, putting an end to alleged ongoing prostitution ring. As part of this six-month operation, two other raids were conducted in the east end of the city. Evidence was seized at three separate locations and two men and a woman will face charges relating to working in a brothel.
