The federal taxman has been told to keep his hands off the assets of a former Montreal stripper who benefited from nearly $2-million in cash and luxury gifts from an elderly client.
The ruling was applauded by Montreal sex workers, who say gifts between consenting adults are no business of the state.
A tax judge ruled that the Louis Vuitton luggage, Mercedes Benz rental car, eight fur coats, $6,000 in Birks jewellery and $1.3-million in cash that the wealthy patron bestowed on Martine Landry amounted to a “donation.”

“We’d consider him a very, very generous friend,” said Émilie Laliberté, an outreach worker with the group Stella. “Clients [in strip clubs] can be judges as often as policemen or janitors. Some have more means than others, and not all are so generous.”
